»Biophilia« is the musical project and forthcoming eighth full-length studio album from Björk. The album was expected to be released on September 27th, over four years after her last original studio album Volta (2007); however, the release date has since been pushed back to October 10th, 2011.
The album is ›partly recorded‹ on Apple’s iPad and, as well as a standard CD release, will be released in the form of a series of apps. »Biophilia« will be the world's »first app album« in collaboration with Apple. Björk has described the project as a multimedia collection »encompassing music, apps, internet, installations, and live shows«. Material from the album debuted during a concert series which was held in the summer of 2011 at the Manchester International Festival.
The Ultimate Edition of »Biophilia« includes the »Biophilia« CD; a second CD with exclusive recordings; the »Biophilia« Manual, which includes photographs, stories behind the songs, scores and lyrics; and a wooden box with 10 chromed tuning forks, each one adjusted to the tone of a »Biophilia« track, covering a complete octave in a non-conventional scale (There are two forks which produce the same note and another one which is silent). The Ultimate Edition is limited to 200 units, each one numbered and made to order, and every single book and fork pack would only be produced once.
